## ChatGPT Desktop (Codex Desktop) for Linux — What Changed & Why It Matters
### What happened
On **August 11, 2026**, OpenAI released the **ChatGPT desktop app for Linux in preview**, bringing **ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex** together in a single native desktop application. This is the first time OpenAI's desktop client has been available on Linux — previously it existed only on macOS and Windows.
**Supported platforms** (per the official announcement):
- Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and 26.04 LTS
- Debian 13
- Fedora 43 and 44
- Both **x64 and ARM64** architectures
- Distributed as **.deb and .rpm** packages
The app is a closed-source, native client. Arch Linux isn't officially supported, but community packages are already available in the AUR. ### The context: how Codex became a desktop app
This Linux release is the final step in a rollout that began earlier in 2026. On **February 2, 2026**, OpenAI introduced the standalone **Codex app for macOS** — a "command center for agents" that lets you run multiple coding agents in parallel, review diffs, use worktrees, and extend Codex with "skills" and automations. On **March 4, 2026**, the app came to **Windows**. In **July 2026**, OpenAI merged the standalone Codex app into the ChatGPT desktop client (keeping Codex as a separate workspace), and the Linux preview uses that same unified setup. ### What the Linux app actually does
Inside the app you can switch between **ChatGPT** (general chat), **ChatGPT Work** (longer, more complex tasks), and **Codex** (a project-focused development workspace). Codex on the desktop can:
- Open local projects and repositories
- Edit files and make changes
- Work with Git and run commands with user permissions
- Manage its own history and workspace (separate from ChatGPT)
- Use browser workflows
This matters because Linux developers previously only had the **Codex CLI** and an **IDE extension** — the graphical, project-focused desktop workflow was exclusive to macOS/Windows. ### Why it matters
1. **Linux was the most-requested platform.** OpenAI said: *"Linux has been one of the most-requested platforms for the desktop app, and this launch extends ChatGPT and Codex across every major desktop operating system."* ([TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/11/openai-launches-chatgpt-desktop-app-for-linux/))
2. **Competitive pressure.** OpenAI is playing catch-up with **Anthropic**, which shipped a **Claude desktop app for Linux about a month earlier** (for Ubuntu 22.04+ and Debian 12+). ([TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/11/openai-launches-chatgpt-desktop-app-for-linux/))
3. **It's a preview, not a final release.** OpenAI explicitly calls it a preview, so users should expect bugs and changes. Early community feedback already surfaced **Wayland IME (input-method) issues** on Fedora/KDE with Fcitx (Japanese/Korean input), with a workaround of launching with `--enable-wayland-ime`. ([OpenAI Developer Community](https://community.openai.com/t/codex-in-chatgpt-desktop-app-for-linux-is-now-in-preview/1390027))
4. **Security caution.** Because Codex can edit files, run commands, and access Git repos with user permissions, reviewers warn users to be cautious before granting the app full filesystem access. ([linuxiac](https://linuxiac.com/openai-launches-official-chatgpt-desktop-app-for-linux-in-preview/))
