## Mapping a domain to your Vercel webapp
Here's the official workflow, per [Vercel's "Adding & Configuring a Custom Domain" docs](https://vercel.com/docs/domains/working-with-domains/add-a-domain):
### 1. Add the domain to your project
1. On your Vercel dashboard, select the **project** you want to map the domain to.
2. Open **Settings** in the sidebar, then select **Domains**.
3. Click **Add Domain** and type the domain you want to use (e.g. `example.com` or `app.example.com`).
- If you add an **apex domain** (e.g. `example.com`), Vercel will prompt you to also add the `www` subdomain prefix — Vercel recommends using the `www` version and redirecting the apex to it.
- Hobby teams have a limit of **50 custom domains per project**.
### 2. Configure DNS at your registrar
After adding the domain, Vercel's dashboard shows you exactly which records to create. The method depends on the domain type ([source](https://vercel.com/docs/domains/working-with-domains/add-a-domain)):
| Your domain type | What to configure |
|---|---|
| **Apex domain** (e.g. `example.com`) | An **A record** |
| **Subdomain** (e.g. `docs.example.com`) | A **CNAME record** |
| Domain already in use by another Vercel account | A **TXT record** to verify ownership |
| Either type | Can alternatively use the **Nameservers** method (point your registrar's nameservers at Vercel) |
Go to your domain registrar (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Cloudflare, etc.) and add the record(s) Vercel displays. Vercel shows the exact values to copy — use those, since the specific A-record IP and CNAME target are shown live in your dashboard.
### 3. Verify and go live
- Once DNS propagates, Vercel automatically issues an **SSL certificate** for the domain.
- Check status under **Settings → Domains** in your project — it will show whether the domain is configured correctly and the certificate is active.
- Vercel automatically assigns your custom domain to the **production deployment**. With Git connected, every push/merge to your production branch (usually `main`) redeploys to that domain ([Deploying & Redirecting Domains](https://vercel.com/docs/domains/working-with-domains/deploying-and-redirecting)).
### Notes
- **Wildcard domains** (e.g. `*.acme.com`) are supported by prefixing with `*.`, but require the nameservers method (or delegating the `_acme-challenge` subdomain) so Vercel can issue/renew the certificate.
- If you don't own a domain yet, you can **purchase one directly through Vercel**.

One caveat: the exact A-record IP address and CNAME target values are rendered dynamically in your Vercel dashboard and weren't fully captured in the docs page text I opened, so copy those specific values from your own project's **Settings → Domains** screen rather than from a static guide.
